Inner work lives drive performance. The state of the inner work lives fluctuates day by day as a reflection of the events that take place at work. Nothing ground-breaking about that. No, what is revealing is that of all the events that can engage people at work the single most important is simply making progress on something meaningful to you.
This is the progress principle.
It was written about in the Harvard Business Review and it is based on a tremendous amount of research done by Teresa Amabile, and what it determines is that people who feel happy, successful, and fulfilled by their work they all have one thing in common.
They feel as they are making progress on something that matters – to them. That´s it. Sounds really simple – and it is.
The key to applying it is not to focus on a whole “To-Do” list. Instead, just focus on ONE THING per day that matters to you. By focusing on one thing and one thing only you can let go of all distractions that surround you on a daily basis.
This creates a sense of control and a sense of progress that science proves will make you happy, more confident, more productive, and more present.
These small wins will impact you immensely. So, instead of being overwhelmed by all the things you need to do – focus on one thing that is most important for your progress – right now – and take a small step to make it happen.
