Imagine for a moment that you were living your dream life!
What would you do? What would you work with? Would you work? Where would you live? Where would you go for vacation? What kind of car would you drive?
For some people, the idea of paint this dream picture can be daunting but try to be as specific and detailed as you possibly can.
Got a clear picture?
Now rate your current situation from a scale from 0 – 10. 10 is the dream life that you just imagined and 0 is not even getting started. Where would you rate your life at this specific point?
Maybe you rated it as a 3 or a 6 or even a 1. As long as you rated it anywhere above 0 you are actually more likely to achieve your vision. How could that be?
Research has been conducted that shows that as long as we are on the way to achieving a goal we are more likely to continue than if we are starting from scratch.
In one of the experiments, a carwash was handing out loyalty cards to their customers. Every time the customer bought a car wash, they received a stamp on their card and when they filled the card up with 8 stamps, they received a free car wash. At the same carwash, a variation of the loyalty cards was handed out to a different set of customers. This card contained 10 spots to be filled but when the card was handed out, 2 stamps had already been added.
Therefore, the “goal” was the same for both cards. Buy 8 car washes, get 1 free. But the psychology was different. In one case you were already 20% on the way to achieving the goal and in the other case you need to start from scratch. Now to the interesting findings.
A few months later, 19% of the customers receiving an empty card had earned a free car wash.
44% of the customers in the group that received a head start (2 stamps already on the card) had earned a free car wash. And the head start group earned their car wash faster!
We find it more motivating to be partly on our way towards a goal than to be at the starting gate.
Now consider your dream life again. Say you rated your current situation as a 2. You are 20% on your way to receiving your dream. Great! But it can still seem were far away to reach 10. Therefore, equally important as it is to have a big vision (your dream life) is to define the next step. What will it take to rate your current state as a 3 instead of a 2?
This encouragement is critical because it is self-reinforcing. When you are celebrating the movement from 2 to 3 and then from 3 to 4 you gain confidence that you can make the next advance.
Another advantage is that you demystify the journey. By using the miracle scale, you always have a clear idea of where you are going next, and you have a clear sense of what the next small victory will be. You are moving forward, and, even better, you are more confident in your ability to keep moving forward.
Have you defined your next step yet? If not, now is the time.
